Legoland install meters from Stream Measurement to identify and reduce water losses

Date: 26.03.2009

Water Consultant
Legoland of Windsor, the world famous entertainment theme park recently undertook a programme of installing submeters at all water dispense points across their complex. Through their energy and water consultant McKinnon & Clarke, Legoland accessed the meter portfolio of Stream Measurement of Oldham to find solutions to their meter requirements.

As part of Legoland's drive to minimise waste and reduce costs, an exercise was implemented to investigate and identify the source of any leakage from the site's supply network. In order to pinpoint areas requiring remedial works, it was concluded that the most effective method would be a programme of metering throughout the site.

As the visitors wander through this park of excitement and thrills, they are blissfully unaware that Legoland are doing their bit for water conservation by taking a responsible and proactive approach to water consumption with this project deployment.

Stream worked closely with McKinnon & Clarke in identifying, sizing and supplying  the correct meter in areas with wonderful sounding names such as Pirate Falls, Harbour and Stunt Lake and Fairy Tale Brook to name a few. In total Legoland have installed 25 water meters in sizes starting at 20mm through to 100mm using either piston or helical vane technology to measure accurately consumption whether it be irrigation, facility, retail or ride usage.

Currently the meters are read manually every week but the meter selection provided by Stream is AMR ready, this will allow Legoland to install a remote reading system at a later date should they so wish without interfering with the network.

Landscape & Facilities ManagerPaul Howard – Landscape and Facilities Manager at Legoland when asked about the project said

“The main driver behind installing these meters is to ensure we manage our water usage effectively, identifying possible leaks at early stages. Measuring exactly what we use to ground (cleaning and irrigation),drain and to look into possibility of water collection/recycle. Our key motive is to reduce waste”

Product Information
The piston meters installed are in the size range 20 – 40mm. The 620 rotary piston meter has been specially Piston Metersdeveloped for operators anxious to optimise billing on their drinking water networks. Its design is based on rotary piston technology in order to achieve unrivalled accuracy and measuring range.
Its reliability, resistance to impurities and quiet operation satisfies all needs and the metal/glass register version guarantees meter readability for the whole meter life, even in submerged installation places.

The WPD helical Vane turbine meters supplied by Stream, are part of the most extensive flowmeter portfolio in the Uk , enhanced by the in-depth knowledge and flow meter expertise Stream staff deliver to its customers. The meters supplied to Legoland have a hermetically sealed register (IP 68) and its accuracy is guaranteed by the patented hydro-dynamically balanced rotor (≤DN 300). The register may be rotated through 360°and the meter has a high overload capability. Maintenance is eased by a removable measuring element and the powder coating affords maximum corrosion protection which is essential when used in the applications such as Legoland. The WPD meters can be fitted with a variety of outputs enabling automatic meter reading capability.
